Marking the premiere exhibition at its new location in Highland Park, the Kristi Engle Gallery is proud to present a new series of paintings and works on paper by Steven LaRose. In "Portraits or Landscapes from the Uncanny Mist," the artist allows "the strange to collide with the familiar and create cognitive dissonance."
LaRose uses a set of simple almost instinctual guidelines to drive these highly crafted compositions. Yet he follows these rules in order to break them, letting the physical nature of his medium take its course as well. Exploring a primordial world of paint, where drips and splats are cultivated rather than excised, the artist creates vortexes and eddies of paint that suck the viewer in and engage them directly. While the paint is drawing attention to itself as paint, this non-representational work also conjures ever-shifting images of subliminal representation. LaRoseÕs work allows us to experience the confluence between desire and language as he searches for the ineffable.
Now based in Southern Oregon, LaRose is a graduate of the Claremont Graduate University. This is his first solo show in Los Angeles.
Also available as part of the exhibition will be a 2008 wall calendar featuring LaRose's work, a book of poetry by Shin Yu Pai printed in collaboration with LaRose from SlackBuddha Press, as well as an exhibition catalogue.
Kristi Engle Gallery devotes itself primarily to solo exhibitions of new works by contemporary artists. It is located in Highland Park, near the corner of Ave. 50 and York Blvd.
